Jiri, Dolakha: Lauti Waterfall, located in Jiri Municipality popularly known as the “Switzerland of Nepal” is fast emerging as a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists. Situated just six kilometers from Jiri Bazaar, the waterfall plunges from a height of approximately 50 meters, offering visitors a breathtaking and serene natural spectacle. Nestled among the hills of Jiri, Hanumante, Chyordung, and Tame, the region lies at elevations ranging from 1,649 meters to as high as 5,341 meters above sea level. Rich in religious, historical, cultural, and natural heritage, Lauti Waterfall stands out as one of Jiri’s most significant tourist destinations. The name Lauti Waterfall is rooted in local folklore. According to elderly residents, in earlier times, especially during festivals such as Jhande Purnima and Chandi Purnima, shamans (banjhankris) from various regions would gather at the waterfall to bathe and perform tantric rituals and dances. A well known shaman named “Lauti” was said to regularly carry out such practices at this site, and it is believed that the waterfall was named after him.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of domestic tourists visiting the area has increased noticeably. Access to the waterfall has also improved with the construction of a motorable road from Jiri Hatdanda (Manedanda) to a point just three kilometers from the site, making the destination more convenient for visitors. Several other attractions surround Lauti Waterfall. These include Kudaar Cave, large enough to shelter 50 to 60 cows and buffaloes, lush tea gardens that produce the well known “Jiri Tea,” and Upper Sikri, a traditional settlement of the Jirel community. The waterfall’s water is also utilized for nearby trout farming, adding to the area’s ecological and economic value. Tourists visiting Jiri can enjoy various hiking routes that connect Jiri Bazaar, Devithan Temple, Buddha Park, tea estates, Lauti Waterfall, Sikri settlement, Bojini Hydropower Project, Dobhan, Jiri Airport, agricultural farms, and the Jiri Technical Education Institute.

Local residents say that despite its immense potential, the area has yet to see adequate development. They emphasize the need for ward offices and the municipality to prioritize infrastructure and promotion to establish Lauti Waterfall as a fully developed tourist destination. With its stunning natural beauty and deep historical significance, Lauti Waterfall holds great promise as a must-visit destination and awaits travelers with open arms.
